Cum Laude 2020

Remarks from our Chapter President and Secretary:

2020 marks the 60th induction ceremony of the Salisbury Chapter of the Cum Laude Society – and the first virtual induction ceremony in the Chapter’s long history. We are proud to honor the 345th through 355th members elected to this Chapter since its founding in 1959 by Mr. Robert Gardner, Mr. George Langdon, Mr. Edwin Tappert, and Mr. Jeffrey Walker.

2020欧洲杯直播投注The founders of the Cum Laude Society in 1906 had in mind an association of young men and women on the secondary school level that would be similar to Phi Beta Kappa at the college and university level. Their purpose was simply to encourage and reward good students. Originally, the organization was called the Alpha Delta Tau Fraternity. At a later date, there was concern about the direction taken by Greek letter fraternities, and the name was changed to the Cum Laude Society. It has more than 300 chapters in the leading secondary schools of the country. The Salisbury Chapter received its charter in 1959. Our objective, like that of the national society, is to encourage and recognize superior academic work.

2020欧洲杯直播投注A key feature of the Induction is the role of Ryan Jing.  As a member of the Class of 2020 who was elected to Cum Laude last spring as a fifth former, we welcome Ryan back and commend him on the noteworthy distinction received one year ago. In recognition of his achievements, Ryan would be asked to participate in the official "pinning" of Salisbury's new members.

2020欧洲杯直播投注This year, we formally welcome Julia Barbato of the World Languages Department and Trudy Pzynski of the Mathematics Department, both of whom were appointed to the Cum Laude Society this spring.

And, on behalf of the Chapter, we bid a fond and most appreciative farewell to one of our members who will retire at the end of this academic year: Lisa Sheble. Lisa, your twelve years of service to the Cum Laude Society make you the second longest continuously tenured member of the current Salisbury Chapter. That tenure has been distinguished by a keen sense of equity that always ensured our path was well-lighted, true, and right. Thank you, Lisa, for your service to the Chapter.

2020欧洲杯直播投注The distinguished record these eleven gentlemen have made at Salisbury has won membership in the Cum Laude Society, a fellowship of scholars whose purpose is to recognize and reward academic excellence. As you new members pursue your education, we hope that each of you will regard this honor as a stimulus that will lead you to use your superior talent to make some contribution to humankind’s ongoing search for greater understanding of ourselves, our society, our world, and our universe.

Faculty Tribute

A bit of history about the Cum Laude Motto:

The Cum Laude Society was originally called the Alpha Delta Tau Fraternity. These letters of the Greek alphabet represent the words Arete, Dike, and Time, which, when translated into English, mean Excellence, Justice, and Honor. Along with the names of the charter and other members of the Chapter, your names will soon be inscribed on the plaque outside the College Office of the Main Building – a plaque which contains the names of the most illustrious scholars who have graduated from Salisbury School since 1959.
